He Did Not Lose His Face in Combat. He Lost It on Leave.

In January 2021, U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Randy Adams was home in Chicago, days from a posting overseas.

Two men attacked him. He spent about a month in a coma. Organs failed. Infection and trauma took much of his midface — nose, upper lip, the architecture people use without thinking when they drink from a glass. He woke at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas and did not recognize the man in the mirror. Speech, memory, and the long work of reconstruction followed. A custom prosthetic and compression mask gave him a public face he could choose to wear or set aside.

The story that later filled TikTok and Instagram was not an IED on a distant road. Commenters often assumed war. Adams’s own account, and the reporting that tracked it, pointed to a street assault and a hospital that had to invent a life afterward.

He did not disappear. Under the name Rise Up he posted the scars, the straw technique that replaced lips, the workouts, the faith talk, the days he left the room he had been afraid to leave. Followers numbered in the hundreds of thousands, then more. In 2025 he told them he was undergoing further reconstruction at Yale — another chapter, not a reset.

What he offers is not a tidy parable about battle. It is a man who was unmade off duty, who learned to eat in private and then on camera, and who treated the camera as a kind of second surgery: if people were going to look, they would look at the truth.
