Christa Pike May Never Fully Recover, Attorney Says
Days after surviving Tennessee’s failed execution attempt, Christa Pike remains critically ill in a hospital, according to her attorney.
Pike, 50, reportedly remains unconscious and dependent on a ventilator after receiving two doses of pentobarbital during the September 30 execution attempt at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution.
Her attorney, Stephen Ferrell, said doctors have not yet been able to provide a clear long-term prognosis.
“If she recovers, she may not fully recover,” Ferrell said, raising questions about Pike’s potential long-term condition and future competency.
According to Pike’s legal team, both of her arms were swollen, burned and blistered when she arrived at the hospital. Her attorneys also say seven needles were used during attempts to establish IV access.
Ferrell said he was not aware of Pike regaining consciousness since the execution attempt.
Meanwhile, Tennessee has not announced whether it will seek another execution date. Governor Bill Lee has halted executions for the remainder of 2026 and ordered an independent investigation into the failed procedure.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
The case has now entered an uncertain new phase. Pike’s medical condition could affect both her legal proceedings and any future action involving her death sentence.
Before any decision about another execution can be considered, the independent investigation will need to establish exactly what happened during the September 30 procedure and why it failed.
