Sheinbaum confirmed it bluntly: “Google has already been sued.” And a court in Mexico City already issued a favorable ruling ordering Google to restore the original name in the areas corresponding to Mexico and Cuba.

It all started when Trump signed an executive order to rename the gulf as “Gulf of America,” but that order only applied to the US continental shelf. Google went further: it changed the name of the ENTIRE gulf, including Mexican and Cuban territorial waters. Sheinbaum made it clear: “Not even Trump proposes renaming the entire gulf. Google is wrong.”

Mexico cited the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea: a country’s territorial sovereignty only extends 12 nautical miles from its coast. Everything beyond that is international water. Nobody, not Google, not Trump, can rename what doesn’t belong to them.
