12-Year-Old Girl Swims for Over Two Hours to Seek Help After Boat Capsizes in Antique, Philippines

A 12-year-old girl from Antique, Philippines is being praised for her extraordinary bravery after surviving a dangerous maritime incident in which she swam through rough seas for more than two hours to seek help after their boat capsized on May 6.

The girl, identified as Cherry Ann Mateo, was traveling home with three older passengers aboard a motorized banca when sudden strong winds and powerful waves struck the vessel. The small boat was overturned by the rough sea conditions, leaving all passengers stranded in open water.

According to initial reports, while the three older passengers remained with the drifting overturned boat, Cherry Ann made a life-saving decision. Facing strong currents and turbulent waters, she began swimming toward the shore in an attempt to alert rescuers and secure help for the others.

Authorities described the sea conditions at the time as extremely dangerous, noting that even experienced rescue personnel would have found it difficult to navigate the waves and currents.
