Woman Faints After Being Publicly Caned 100 Times for Premarital Sex
A woman in Indonesia collapsed and had to be carried away after she and her boyfriend were each publicly flogged 100 times as punishment for having sexual relations before marriage.
The incident occurred in Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province in northern Sumatra, where strict Sharia law is enforced.
According to local reports, the unidentified woman and her partner were brought to a public square and caned in front of spectators. A masked official dressed in brown carried out the punishment using a rattan cane.
During the flogging, the woman reportedly fainted from the pain and exhaustion. She was unable to walk afterward and had to be helped away from the scene. Her partner was also seen enduring visible pain as he received his lashes.
Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that implements Islamic Sharia law, which includes corporal punishment for offenses such as premarital sex, adultery, gambling, and alcohol consumption. The number of lashes can range from 25 to 100 depending on the severity of the violation.
This public caning has drawn significant attention and criticism from human rights organizations, who have raised concerns about the harshness of the punishment and its impact on personal freedoms, especially for women.
The case highlights the ongoing debate over the application of Sharia law in parts of Indonesia and its compatibility with modern human rights standards.
