Harris County Deputy Sheriff Fernando Esqueda Killed in Ambush After Locating Suspect Vehicle

Houston, Texas — A five-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot in an ambush while investigating a vehicle linked to an aggravated assault, authorities said.

Deputy Sheriff Fernando Esqueda was killed in the line of duty after he located an unoccupied vehicle connected to a violent incident at a local restaurant. The suspect had allegedly become enraged over an incorrect food order, argued with an employee, and pistol-whipped the worker.

Witnesses provided responding deputies with the suspect’s license plate number. Detectives used a license plate reader system to identify a search area, but an initial sweep did not locate the vehicle. A short time later, Deputy Esqueda returned to the location and found the suspect’s vehicle. As he coordinated with other deputies, the suspect ambushed him, shooting him multiple times.

Responding officers rushed Deputy Esqueda to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The primary suspect was arrested the following day and charged with capital murder. A second individual was also charged with capital murder and tampering with evidence.

Deputy Esqueda had served with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for five years and was assigned to the Violent Persons Task Force. At the time of the incident, he was working mandatory patrols in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.

He is survived by his mother, father, three sisters, three brothers, and his fiancée.

A heartfelt mural honoring Deputy Esqueda has appeared in the community, featuring his portrait alongside American and Mexican flags, reflecting his proud heritage and service.

Colleagues and community members have remembered Esqueda as a dedicated law enforcement officer who put his life on the line to protect others. His death has prompted an outpouring of support for his family and renewed focus on the dangers faced by officers responding to seemingly routine calls.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to ensure justice for Deputy Esqueda and his loved ones.
