Michigan Teen Girl Fights Off Repeat Sex Offender Who Attacked Her While Walking Home from School

The most inspiring detail wasn’t just that she survived — it was that a 14-year-old girl bravely fought back against a much larger, repeat sex offender and escaped.

Courageous Defense in Kentwood

On May 12, 2026, a 14-year-old girl was walking home from school in a quiet neighborhood in Kentwood, Michigan, when a black SUV pulled up beside her around 6 p.m.

John Moore, a 29-year-old repeat sex offender, suddenly jumped out of the vehicle, rushed toward her, and grabbed her while saying “I got you,” according to court records. He allegedly tried to restrain and abduct the teen.

But the brave girl fought back fiercely. She managed to injure her much larger attacker and break free, running to safety as Moore fled back to his SUV and drove away.

A Pattern of Attacks

The very next day, Moore allegedly struck again. He approached a 66-year-old woman who was gardening outside her home in another Kentwood neighborhood. He made unwanted advances, assaulted her, and then fled the scene.

Police quickly connected the two incidents due to strong similarities. Moore was arrested and charged with assault and battery and unlawful imprisonment. He is being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility on $140,000 bail, along with two probation violations.

Repeat Offender with Dark History

This was not Moore’s first offense. In 2023, he was caught recording upskirt videos of women, including one incident where a woman spotted him peering over a bathroom stall. About a year and a half later, he was caught at a Meijer store pretending to remove spiders from women’s backs before grabbing their behinds. Three women reported being assaulted in that incident.

Despite his history, Moore was sentenced to probation in 2025 after his public defender described him as a “kind” and “gentle” person with possible substance abuse issues.

A Story of Bravery

The 14-year-old girl’s quick thinking and determination to fight back likely saved her from a much worse outcome. Her courage has been praised by investigators and the community.

This terrifying incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of personal safety awareness, especially for young people walking alone. It also highlights ongoing concerns about repeat offenders in the justice system.

Authorities continue to investigate, and the case remains active.
