TRAGIC FIRE CLAIMS FATHER AND SON IN HEMPSTEAD APARTMENT

A devastating two-alarm fire broke out early Friday morning in a Hempstead apartment building on Albemarle Avenue.
42-year-old Kenneth Roberts and his 12-year-old son Mekhi were rescued from their basement unit and rushed to Nassau University Medical Center.

The grieving wife and stepmother Lissett Cruz described them as a loving father and a good kid who once dreamed of becoming a firefighter. Ten residents and a dog were displaced.
No smoke detectors were found in the apartment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
