Justice for Preston Davey: Couple Sentenced Over Murder of Adopted Toddler

A 13-month-old boy who was placed in the care of people expected to protect and love him became the victim of a devastating crime that has shocked the community.

Jamie Varley, 36, has been given a whole life order for the murder and sexual abuse of Preston Davey, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of release. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for causing or allowing Preston’s death and child cruelty offences.

The court heard that Preston suffered repeated abuse during the months he was in their care before his death in July 2023. Prosecutors presented evidence showing the severity of the harm inflicted on the young child and argued that the couple failed in their duty to protect him.

Varley had claimed that Preston had suffered an accident involving a bath, but medical evidence presented during the trial did not support that explanation. After an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, Varley was convicted of murder and multiple serious offences.

Preston’s family described him as a happy and loved child whose life was taken far too soon. Those who cared for him remembered a little boy who deserved safety, kindness, and the chance to grow up surrounded by love.
