OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Family, friends, and notable figures gathered Monday for the closed-casket funeral of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, a promising high school graduate and college-bound football player whose mysterious death on a July 4 boating trip has left his community in mourning. Celebrities including director Spike Lee and former NFL star Terrell Owens attended the service at Center Pointe Church.

Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, openly wept as she entered the church. “I want to give all thanks to God for choosing Elmore and me to be Nolan’s parents,” she said through tears during the emotional service. His body was found facedown in the water near Horn Island two days after the outing with friends.

The circumstances surrounding Wells’ death remain under investigation by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the FBI. No official cause of death has been publicly released, prompting calls for transparency and an independent autopsy from the family. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump and Rev. Al Sharpton have been involved, with Sharpton announcing a combined $100,000 reward (from the National Action Network and Tyler Perry) for information leading to an arrest.
