Karmelo Anthony Shows New Look in Latest Mugshot After Transfer to Texas State Prison Convicted Murderer Begins 35-Year Sentence

Karmelo Anthony, 19, appeared stunned in his latest mugshot after being transferred to a Texas state prison on Wednesday to begin serving his 35-year sentence for the murder of fellow high school athlete Austin Metcalf.
In the photo obtained by CBS 11, Anthony is seen with a shaved head and wearing a sleeveless tunic. He had spent the previous night in county jail before the transfer to the Wallace Pack Unit near Houston.
It is still unclear whether Anthony will serve his full sentence at the Wallace Pack Unit. Reports indicate he may first go through an intake facility in Huntsville before final assignment. He will not be eligible for parole for 17.5 years and would be around 54 years old upon completing his full term.
Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder on Tuesday for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Metcalf during a high school track meet in April 2025. According to trial testimony, Metcalf had repeatedly asked Anthony — up to 15 times — to leave his team’s tent. Anthony refused and allegedly told Metcalf, “Touch me and find out,” before Metcalf pushed him. Anthony then pulled out a 3.5-inch knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest, piercing his heart.
Metcalf became unconscious shortly after the attack, while Anthony was quickly apprehended after attempting to flee. The jury deliberated for about three hours before convicting him of first-degree murder rather than lesser charges.
Anthony has already filed a motion to appeal his conviction. His legal team and supporters have claimed the prosecution was racially motivated, particularly citing the jury composition, which included white, Asian, and Hispanic members but no Black jurors. Three Black potential jurors were struck by the prosecution because they were teachers, with concerns they might be biased. The judge rejected the defense’s racism claims and upheld the strikes.
This case has drawn significant attention due to its racial undertones and the circumstances surrounding the fatal confrontation between the two teenagers.
