Bright Future Stolen: Penn State Senior Fatally Shot in Brutal Attack Promising 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was weeks from graduation when violence took everything 💔 Surveillance footage reveals his last desperate seconds.
HEARTBREAKING: 22-year-old Billy Schmidt, a Penn State senior studying digital journalism and media, was shot and killed in an apparent robbery just steps from his family home in South Philadelphia early Saturday morning, June 7, 2026.
Schmidt was walking home around 1:30 a.m. after watching the NBA Finals with friends at a local bar when two suspects allegedly stole his cellphone. Surveillance video captured the tragic final moments: Schmidt chased the thieves, only for one of them to turn and shoot him in the chest. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Described by family and friends as a kind, ambitious young man with a bright future ahead, Schmidt was on track to graduate in December. He was a proud Roman Catholic High School alum and dreamed of working for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hundreds gathered this week for an emotional vigil in South Philadelphia, where neighbors, friends, and community leaders remembered his lasting impact. His father called him “my son, my best friend,” while loved ones described the killing as utterly senseless.
Philadelphia police have released images of the two suspects and are questioning a juvenile in connection with the case. A $20,000 reward is being offered for information leading to arrests.
Billy Schmidt’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16. His family and the community continue to mourn the loss of a young life full of promise, stolen far too soon.
