Mexican Trade Group Leader Fired After Racist Gesture Toward South Korean Influencer During World Cup Match

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — A senior Mexican trade group official has been removed from his leadership position after he was caught on camera making a racist gesture toward a South Korean woman during a World Cup match in Guadalajara.
The incident occurred during South Korea’s 2-1 victory over Czechia. South Korean influencer Yoon Su-jin was filming the celebratory atmosphere in the stands when the man seated directly behind her noticed her camera and directed an offensive gesture toward her.
Yoon later shared the video online, expressing how hurt and disappointed she felt by the encounter. The clip quickly went viral, drawing widespread condemnation and sparking discussions about racism and respect at international sporting events.
The man was identified as Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes, who at the time served as president of the Jalisco Association of Surveyors and Geomatics Engineers (CITGEJ). In response to the public backlash, the organization conducted an internal review and promptly announced his removal from the leadership role, stating that his actions did not align with the group’s values.
Following his dismissal, Miramontes issued a public video apology on social media, accepting responsibility for his behavior and expressing regret for the offense caused to Yoon and others.
The controversy has highlighted ongoing issues of racism in sports and the power of social media in holding individuals accountable. Many have praised Yoon Su-jin for speaking out and raising awareness.
This incident serves as a reminder that discriminatory behavior has no place in the spirit of the World Cup or global sporting events.
