Indiana Family Dog Mauls 7-Day-Old Baby to Death; Six Relatives Charged with Neglect

A heartbreaking case in Huntington County, Indiana, has resulted in criminal charges against six family members after their dog fatally mauled a 7-day-old infant in their home. The tragedy has drawn attention to allegations of severe neglect and unsafe living conditions.

According to investigators, 7-day-old Jason Weaver was attacked by the family dog, named Chomp, on September 4, 2025. The baby’s father was reportedly in another room playing video games at the time. The grandfather rushed in holding the infant and called for emergency help as the newborn struggled to breathe.

Responding officers described the home as filthy and uninhabitable, filled with trash, dirty dishes, clothes, and bugs crawling on surfaces—including the baby’s car seat. The house reportedly reeked of animal odor. An autopsy revealed over 180 abrasions on the infant’s body, brain bleeding, broken ribs, and torn lungs.

Family members told police the dog had a history of aggression, including previous bites, and was sometimes jealous of the baby. Despite this, the dog was allowed around the newborn. After the attack, the dog was removed and euthanized. A veterinary exam found it in good condition with no signs of rabies or medical issues.

The six relatives now facing felony charges include the baby’s father, mother, grandfather, uncle, step-grandfather, and grandmother. They are accused of neglect and related offenses involving the dog. The home was condemned by health officials as unfit for human habitation.

This case has shocked the community and raised serious concerns about child safety and animal control in the household. The investigation continues.
