He Never Heard Her Say “Yes”: The Heartbreaking Underwater Proposal That Touched the World

What was meant to be the happiest moment of two lives became one of the most heartbreaking love stories ever shared online.
In September 2019, American couple Steven Weber and Kenesha Antoine were enjoying a once-in-a-lifetime vacation at The Manta Resort on Pemba Island, Tanzania. The resort is famous for its unique underwater room, where guests can sleep beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean while surrounded by marine life.
Unknown to Kenesha, Steven had spent part of the trip preparing a surprise marriage proposal unlike any other.
A Proposal Beneath the Sea
On the third day of their stay, Steven put on snorkeling gear and swam outside the underwater bedroom window. Holding a handwritten note sealed inside a waterproof bag, he pressed it against the glass for Kenesha to read.
The note said:
“I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you… But everything I love about you, I love more every day.”
He then turned the page over to reveal the words:
“Will you please be my wife?”
Moments later, Steven smiled and pulled an engagement ring from his pocket, holding it up for the love of his life to see through the glass. Kenesha, filming from inside the room, laughed with joy as she realized what was happening.
A Tragic Turn
After showing her the ring, Steven swam away from the window, intending to return to the surface.
He never made it back.
According to the resort, Steven tragically drowned while free-diving outside the underwater room. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident were investigated by local authorities, but despite rescue efforts, he could not be saved.
The Answer He Never Heard
Heartbroken, Kenesha later shared the proposal video on social media along with a moving tribute that quickly spread around the world.
She wrote:
