Sydney, Australia — A 38-year-old mother has died following a horrific backyard accident while trying to create a special holiday moment for her children by roasting marshmallows on a BBQ.

Charlotte Rose-Ann Hill was setting up the barbecue at her Sydney home when she caught alight in front of her 11-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. The children witnessed the tragedy unfold and acted heroically in the moment.

According to family members, the young daughter screamed to alert their father, while the son used his jacket in an attempt to extinguish the flames. Their father provided first aid and rushed Charlotte to the hospital.

Charlotte suffered serious burns to her face and hands. She initially pulled through surgery and was able to speak with her children over the phone, giving the family hope. However, she later became unresponsive due to medical complications and passed away.

Her cousin, Bianca Hill, described Charlotte as a loving and generous mother who “would literally do anything” to ensure her children had a happy childhood. “She broke hearts with her beautiful smile,” Bianca said. “Not just on the outside, but she was always just such a generous and very kind person with the biggest heart.”

The family noted the particular pain of the loss, as Charlotte had experienced her own mother’s death as a child and was determined not to let her children endure the same trauma.
