In Memory of Noah Watson Miller: Their “Little Minion” and Forever Rainbow

For four long years, Nolan Miller and Jessie Berube prayed for a baby. After four heartbreaking pregnancy losses, their miracle finally arrived. On May 31, 2017, at 10:28 p.m., Noah Watson Miller was born by emergency C-section. His middle name honored Nolan’s grandfather. From the moment his father held him for those first three hours, Noah was described as a “perfect baby” — happy, rarely crying, and always ready with a smile for anyone who met him.

Noah was their rainbow baby, the light after years of loss. He grew into a joyful little boy who loved being held, smiled at strangers, and was just beginning to rock on his hands and knees, so close to crawling and exploring the world with his parents. Aside from occasional breath-holding that doctors assured them was normal, and one brief episode at seven weeks when he turned blue, he appeared healthy and thriving.

At around seven and a half months old, Noah developed a cough. His parents took him to the doctor three days in a row until they were taken seriously. He was diagnosed with a viral chest infection expected to pass on its own. Even while sick, Noah remained his cheerful self — never cranky, still smiling.

Then, one Sunday evening, everything changed in an instant. While resting beside his father on the couch, Noah became pale and unresponsive. Nolan performed CPR for ten minutes until help arrived. Noah’s heart eventually restarted after 45 minutes of efforts, offering a flicker of hope. He was airlifted to a children’s hospital in Calgary, but the lack of oxygen had caused severe brain swelling. After 24 hours, doctors confirmed there was no brain activity. Surrounded by loved ones, Noah was taken off life support. He was just over seven months old.

The family later shared that the loss was consistent with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the sudden and unexplained death of an otherwise healthy infant. In the midst of their grief, Nolan and Jessie found ways to keep Noah’s memory alive. They named a star after him in the Gemini constellation — “Noah Miller (Little Minion)” — so that anyone looking up could share a piece of the love they hold for their son. They invited others to donate to SIDS Calgary in his name and to send messages of support.

Noah’s photos capture a bright-eyed, smiling baby full of life: nestled close to his father, laughing in a yellow Minion-style hat, wearing a little fedora, and held tightly by both parents outdoors. Those images, and the nickname “Little Minion,” continue to remind everyone who sees them of a short but deeply cherished life.

Noah Watson Miller’s story is one of profound hope followed by unimaginable loss. It is also a story of parents who, after years of waiting, were given the gift of a happy, loving son — even if only for a brief time — and who continue to honor him by sharing his light with the world.

It is not goodbye. It is “’til we meet again, little Buddy.”

Rest peacefully, Noah. Your smile and spirit remain forever in the hearts of those who loved you.
