The triple-murder trial of Lindsay Clancy continued this week with emotional testimony from her former husband, Patrick Clancy, who described the moment he returned home and discovered the aftermath of their three young children’s deaths.

Patrick Clancy took the stand as the prosecution’s first major witness and spent two days recounting the events of January 2023. He told jurors that when he came back to their Duxbury, Massachusetts home after running errands, the house was unusually quiet. He found the door to the bedroom he shared with Lindsay locked. After retrieving a key and opening it, he saw blood throughout the room and an open window.

“It was everywhere,” he testified. “It looked like it was sprayed almost with a hose. There was a huge puddle in the middle of the room.”

Discovering the Children
Patrick said he then went outside and found Lindsay injured on the ground beneath the window. When he asked where the children were, she indicated they were in the basement. There, he discovered 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan unresponsive. All three had been strangled.

Jurors later heard the 911 call Patrick made that night. On the recording, he can be heard telling the dispatcher, “She killed the kids!” in a state of distress. Lindsay Clancy became visibly emotional in the courtroom as the audio played and was later wheeled out in tears.

Defense Position
Lindsay Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder. Her attorneys argue that she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and extreme mental illness at the time of the killings and should not be held criminally responsible. If convicted, she faces the possibility of life in prison.

Patrick Clancy’s testimony also covered aspects of the couple’s life leading up to the deaths, including Lindsay’s physical recoveries after childbirth and her mental health struggles. He has since divorced her and remarried.

Ongoing Trial
The case has drawn national attention because of the ages of the children and the defense’s focus on postpartum mental health. Prosecutors maintain that Lindsay Clancy is responsible for the deaths. The trial is expected to continue with additional witnesses in the coming days.
