After Two Weeks Without a Smile, Little Loki Finds Joy Again

It began with what seemed like an ordinary childhood fever. Loki’s parents thought their 17-month-old son had a common illness. Within hours, however, the happy little boy was rushed to hospital as doctors fought to stabilise him.
His family stayed by his side through fear, uncertainty and a life-changing operation. Loki survived, but the joyful smile his parents knew so well disappeared. For nearly two weeks they waited. They showed him his favourite toy, held his tiny hand and whispered words of love and encouragement. Still, Loki remained quiet.
Then two hospital entertainers entered his room with a small puppet and floating bubbles. Loki watched carefully. Suddenly the corners of his mouth began to rise. He smiled again.
His mother covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes. His father leaned closer, barely able to believe what he was seeing. To others it may have looked like one tiny smile. To Loki’s family it meant hope had finally returned.
This brave little boy still has a long recovery ahead, but his story shows that even after the darkest moments, joy can find its way back.
