Christina Fisher, a single mother in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, faced a difficult decision when she learned she was pregnant in 2015. Already raising an older daughter and dealing with financial hardship (she described herself as “basically homeless” at the time), she arranged an open adoption so her baby could have greater stability and opportunities.

On January 11, 2016, Abigail Lynn was born. Routine prenatal tests, including amniocentesis and ultrasound, had not detected any issues. Shortly after birth, however, doctors diagnosed the newborn with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic condition (occurring in roughly 1 in 50,000 births) that affects the development of facial bones and tissues. Abigail had underdeveloped cheekbones and jaw, differences in the size and shape of her ears, a cleft palate, and breathing difficulties that required several weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. The condition does not affect intelligence or cognitive function. It was later learned that Abigail’s biological father has Treacher Collins syndrome.

The prospective adoptive mother was present at the hospital. According to Christina, after seeing Abigail in the NICU she left in tears, remarking on the baby’s appearance, and never returned. The adoption plan ended. In that moment Christina decided to raise her daughter herself. “I took it as a sign that she was supposed to be mine,” she later said. “There is nothing wrong with my baby.”

Christina and Abigail received community support, including donations through a GoFundMe campaign that helped with immediate needs. Over the years Abigail has undergone medical care and surgeries to address breathing, hearing, and craniofacial concerns. She has been described by her mother as a happy, compassionate, and resilient child who loves to color, sing, and interact with others. In 2019 she was named a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion. The family later moved to Louisiana, where Abigail continues to receive specialized care from a multidisciplinary craniofacial team and has been celebrated for her vibrant personality.

Christina has repeatedly expressed that keeping Abigail was the best decision of her life. “I can’t imagine my life without her,” she has said. “I would choose her every time.” Abigail’s story has become a widely shared example of maternal love, acceptance of difference, and the strength that can emerge from unexpected challenges.
