Umu, a joyful three-year-old girl from Sierra Leone, was born with a benign tumor on the side of her face and neck. Her mother, Yei, had expected a healthy baby and was devastated when she first saw the growth. In a country with no maxillofacial surgeons available, the family explored traditional herbal remedies, fasting, and other options, but nothing halted the tumor’s steady enlargement.

As Umu grew, so did the mass. It pressed dangerously close to her airway, creating a high risk of suffocation and making eating more difficult. Stigma added to the family’s burden—people stared, asked questions, and sometimes kept their distance—yet Umu’s playful, confident personality remained largely unaffected. Her mother lived in constant fear that the tumor would eventually take her daughter’s life.

Hope arrived when the family learned that the hospital ship Global Mercy, operated by the international charity Mercy Ships, had docked in Freetown and was offering free specialized surgeries. Accompanied by her mother and aunt, Umu was assessed and prioritized for immediate care. Volunteer maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Gary Parker and his team performed a delicate operation to remove the tumor, relieving the pressure on her airway and restoring greater facial symmetry.

The surgery was successful. Umu recovered on board the ship, and when she looked in a mirror afterward, her mother described an overwhelming sense of relief—“a burden has been lifted.” Today, Umu is growing stronger, attending school, making friends, and living free from the physical and social weight of the tumor that once defined her early years. Her story highlights both the critical shortage of specialized surgical care in many regions and the life-changing impact of volunteer medical missions.
