TENNESSEE: 6-YEAR-OLD WINTER SKYY JONES DIED AFTER SHE WAS ALLEGEDLY LEFT FOR HOURS ON A DAYCARE BUS — HER FAMILY SAYS THE NONVERBAL AUTISTIC CHILD COULD NOT CALL OUT FOR HELP
A family is grieving the unimaginable loss of Winter Skyy Jones, 6, a little girl remembered as sweet, loving, full of life, and deeply cherished by the people who knew her. Winter was autistic and nonverbal, making her especially dependent on the adults entrusted with her care to make sure she was safe.
On August 13, 2026, Winter was supposed to be transported by Kid University in Cordova, Tennessee, but her family says she remained inside the daycare vehicle for hours. She was discovered unresponsive shortly after 3 p.m., when the outside temperature was about 97°F, and she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Her uncle said Winter could not verbally alert anyone that she was still inside the vehicle. Tennessee childcare facilities are required to use monitoring devices, conduct vehicle checks, and maintain daily inspection logs, and authorities are now investigating what procedures were followed that day and how Winter was apparently missed.
No individual has been criminally charged at this time, and Memphis police say the investigation remains ongoing, so authorities have not yet determined whether Winter’s death will result in criminal charges.
Winter was nonverbal, but she was never invisible. May her beautiful life be remembered, and may her name bring the awareness, accountability, and change needed to protect other vulnerable children.
