For almost two decades, one question has refused to disappear: What happened to Madeleine McCann?

On May 3, 2007, three-year-old Madeleine vanished from an apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant while Madeleine and her two younger siblings slept in the apartment. The adults were periodically checking on the children.

At around 10 p.m., Kate McCann discovered that Madeleine was missing.

Within hours, Portuguese police were searching the area. What initially appeared to be a local missing-child case quickly became an international investigation.

Today, Madeleine has still not been found.

That simple fact is the foundation of everything that followed.

What do investigators believe happened?

There is no publicly proven account of Madeleine’s final moments.

German prosecutors have said they believe Madeleine is dead and that German national Christian Brückner was responsible. Portuguese authorities formally identified Brückner as a suspect in 2022. However, he has never been charged with Madeleine’s disappearance, and he has repeatedly denied involvement.

That distinction matters.

A suspect is not the same thing as a convicted criminal. And a prosecutor’s belief is not the same as evidence proven in court.

The investigation therefore remains unresolved.

Why did Brückner become the focus?

Brückner had lived in the Algarve region and had connections to Praia da Luz. Investigators have spent years examining his movements, communications and activities around the time Madeleine disappeared.

German authorities have also examined digital and physical evidence associated with him.

But the evidence has never been publicly presented in a way that conclusively establishes exactly what happened to Madeleine.

This is one of the reasons the case has remained so frustrating.

There are pieces of information.

There are investigative theories.

There are suspects.

But there is no final piece that answers every question.

What about the famous sightings?

Over the years, authorities received thousands of reports from people claiming they had seen Madeleine.

Some were investigated extensively. Others turned out to be misunderstandings or false leads.

This is common in high-profile missing-person cases. Once an image becomes globally recognizable, people begin interpreting ordinary encounters through the lens of the case.

The problem is that a reported sighting is not automatically evidence that Madeleine was alive after May 3, 2007.

Investigators need corroboration: photographs, reliable witnesses, documents, DNA, digital evidence or another independent source capable of confirming the claim.

None of the publicly known sightings has established Madeleine’s whereabouts.

Why hasn’t her body been found?

This is perhaps the most difficult question.

German authorities believe Madeleine was killed, but no body has been recovered.

That creates an enormous evidentiary problem.

Without a body, investigators must establish what happened through other evidence. That could include forensic material, communications, witness testimony, digital records, geographical evidence or a confession supported by independent facts.

So far, no such combination has produced a prosecution.

What is happening now?

The British investigation, known as Operation Grange, remains active. The Metropolitan Police says it continues to work with Portuguese and German authorities and continues to pursue specific lines of inquiry.

Recent reports have also claimed that British investigators received a dossier containing new material relating to Brückner. Reports have described the files as potentially significant, but authorities have not publicly confirmed that the material solves the case.

That means the central mystery remains.

Madeleine disappeared.

There has been no confirmed sighting that establishes where she went.

No remains have been found.

No one has been convicted of causing her disappearance.

And Brückner remains uncharged in the case.

The hardest truth

After nearly 20 years, people understandably want a definitive answer.

But the most honest answer is that investigators still do not publicly have one.

The Madeleine McCann case is not a story with a confirmed ending. It is an investigation built around an unanswered disappearance.

And that is precisely why it continues.

Because somewhere between the evidence investigators have, the evidence they have not yet found and the events of one night in Praia da Luz lies the answer to the question the world has been asking since 2007:
