CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA — An 18-year-old college soccer player was found dead inside the rear of her own Jeep in Pennsylvania, turning what investigators say began as a conversation about her relationship into a homicide investigation involving her boyfriend and his mother.

Karoline Heintz, an incoming freshman at Pennsylvania Western University’s California campus, was found shortly after midnight Thursday after her family became concerned when she failed to return or check in as expected.

Police now accuse her boyfriend, 18-year-old Royce Moser, of fatally stabbing her and then seeking his mother’s help to conceal what had happened.

His mother, Rachel Moser, is also facing criminal charges over what authorities say she did after learning of the killing.

Family Tracks Karoline’s Jeep
Investigators say Karoline had spent part of Wednesday evening with family before leaving and eventually stopping at Royce Moser’s father’s home in North Strabane Township.

Her family became increasingly concerned when she did not check in.

According to investigators, her father was able to track the location of her vehicle. The Jeep was eventually located near the California Borough Public Library.

Investigators also reported a bizarre statement allegedly made by Royce following the killing.

According to the criminal complaint, Royce told investigators that he became angry during the conversation with Karoline but could not remember exactly what she had said.

He allegedly claimed that a “demon” had taken over and told him to stab her.

Rachel also reportedly told investigators that her son had described the same disturbing explanation to her.
