Brazilian ballerina born without arms turns technique into a global stage

SANTA RITA DO SAPUCAÍ, Brazil — Vitória Bueno was born in 2004 without arms, a congenital malformation that made her a curiosity in her small hometown in Minas Gerais. Neighbors lined up outside the house to stare. Her mother, Wanda, worried that ballet class would only make the staring worse.

A physiotherapist saw something else. At five, Bueno already arrived at sessions as if she were dancing. Ballet was recommended to build core strength, balance and coordination. It became her language.

Without arms to counterweight turns or frame port de bras, she rebuilt classical technique around what she had: extreme flexibility, abdominal power and a line she follows with her eyes. “For me, arms are just a detail,” she has said. “I follow with my eyes, as if they were there.” She added jazz and tap at Academia Ândrea Falsarella, where teacher Mayara Falsarella has worked with her since childhood and later served as interpreter on international stages.

Everyday life is managed with her feet: eating, brushing her teeth, applying makeup. Onstage, the absence of arms disappears into phrasing. In a 2021 Reuters visit to the Inatel Theater in her hometown, she moved in ensemble with other dancers in a way that made the missing limbs easy to forget.

International notice came in 2021 on Germany’s Das Supertalent. She received a Golden Buzzer and finished runner-up. In January 2023 she appeared on America’s Got Talent: All-Stars, dancing to Lauren Daigle’s “You Say.” Judges Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel gave a standing ovation. Cowell said the room had gone silent because the panel was “mesmerized.” Mandel noted there was “not a second of faltering” despite the extra demand ballet places on balance.

Bueno has framed the performances as proof that disability is not a veto on ambition. Social media amplified the clips; her account grew by hundreds of thousands of followers. She remains a working student of classical dance in Santa Rita do Sapucaí and a reference point in debates about inclusion on professional stages — not as a symbol first, but as a dancer who solved a technical problem the syllabus was not written to include.
