The investigation into the devastating A66 crash near Middlesbrough has taken another major turn, with police making additional arrests as detectives examine the events that unfolded in the minutes before the collision.

Seven people were killed in the early hours of August 22, 2026, when a Volkswagen Passat travelling against the flow of traffic collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. The two officers inside, PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, were killed alongside all five occupants of the Passat.

Investigators have revealed that the Passat had been pursued by police before entering the A66 in the wrong direction. The pursuit was abandoned, but the vehicle later collided with the police car, which had not been directly involved in the earlier pursuit.

The investigation has now expanded beyond the crash itself. Cleveland Police said multiple people have been arrested over suspected criminal activity linked to the events leading up to the tragedy. The alleged offences include firearms possession, drug-related offences and suspected participation in an organised crime group.

Another significant detail has emerged from the timeline: police had received reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously in the Middlesbrough area before the fatal collision. One vehicle, a Volvo XC60, was reportedly seen ramming properties, while the Passat was believed to have been associated with its activities.

Investigators are also examining a property that was reportedly rammed shortly before the crash. The home was understood to belong to the father of one of the teenage victims, although authorities have stressed there is no evidence that the father was involved in criminal activity.

Meanwhile, an official inquest into the deaths of PC Blades and PC Clough has opened. Preliminary findings stated that Blades died from head and neck injuries, while Clough suffered fatal neck injuries. The proceedings have been adjourned while the wider investigation continues.

The crash has left seven families grieving and raised serious questions about what happened before the Passat entered the A66. Investigators are now piecing together vehicle movements, the earlier pursuit, alleged criminal activity and the circumstances that led to the fatal wrong-way collision.
