During Thursday’s Today broadcast, Savannah was discussing the show’s upcoming trip to Ireland when she referred to her mother in the past tense while talking about their family’s Irish roots.

“My mother’s family — my mother was Irish, her grandmother,” Savannah said as the hosts discussed plans for a live broadcast from County Kerry.

The wording immediately stood out because Nancy Guthrie, 84, remains missing. But despite the emotional significance of the remark, there is no confirmation that Savannah was announcing her mother’s death. A source cited in the reporting specifically rejected that interpretation.

Nancy disappeared from her Catalina Foothills home near Tucson in the early hours of February 1, 2026, after last being seen the previous evening. Investigators have said they believe she was taken against her will and have been treating the investigation as a kidnapping-for-ransom case.

The discussion about Ireland came as Today announced that its hosts will broadcast live from County Kerry on October 16.

One of the newest developments came earlier this month, when the FBI reduced the number of personnel stationed in Tucson and shifted its command post to Phoenix.

That move does not mean authorities have closed the case or believe the investigation has failed.

Instead, investigators are moving from the enormous initial response toward more focused analytical work.

According to reporting on the shift, agents remain in Tucson and continue working with local authorities while investigators spend more time analyzing evidence, including surveillance footage, retail records and complicated DNA findings recovered from Nancy’s home. Authorities have also been working through a large volume of tips generated during the investigation.

The change comes after months of intensive searches and forensic analysis.
