They Heard a Cry on the Fifth Day. The Baby Had No Name.

The February 6, 2023 earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria measured 7.8. In Hatay Province the buildings came down in the cold. Search teams worked past the hour when hope usually thins.

On February 11 — about 128 hours after the first shock — rescuers in the wreckage stopped. A weak cry. In a pocket between slabs they found a girl about two months old. She was alive. Reports from the scene and later hospital visits described only minor scratches and the dehydration anyone would expect after five days without milk. Crowds cheered as she was lifted out. No parent was standing there to claim her.

Nurses called her Gizem — Mystery. She was flown for care, first toward Adana, then to Ankara on a presidential aircraft. For weeks her mother was listed among the dead.

Yasemin Begdas was not dead. She was in another hospital. A DNA test matched them. On about April 1, fifty-four days after the rescue, Turkey’s family minister brought the child to Adana. The girl went home under her own name: Vetin Begdas. Her father and two brothers had been killed in the same collapse.

Social posts sometimes mixed her with other infants pulled from the same disaster, or called her a boy named Kaan. The record that held was simpler: a girl found on the fifth day in Hatay, a mother who had been written off, a reunion that required a laboratory.

The quake killed more than 50,000 people across two countries. One cry under concrete did not balance that ledger. It only proved that, for 128 hours, a small body had found air.
