PART 2 — THE CHILD WHO NEVER EXISTED

Hannah didn’t scream.
She grabbed Mara’s wrist and pulled her behind the hospital bed.
Dean entered the room holding a flashlight.
“Where’s the necklace?”
Hannah pressed one hand protectively over her stomach.
“Why do you want it?”
Dean smiled.
“Because your husband made a very expensive mistake.”
Mara stepped forward.
“Dean, don’t do this.”
“Stay out of it.”
He moved closer.
Hannah noticed something strange.
Dean wasn’t looking at her face.
He was looking at the bedside table.
At the small velvet box where she’d placed her jewelry.
He thought the chip was still inside the necklace.
Hannah slowly removed the diamond chain.
“You want this?”
Dean nodded.
“Give it to me.”
She threw it toward the doorway.
Dean turned instinctively.
Mara grabbed the emergency oxygen cylinder beside the bed and shoved it against the door.
Hannah hit the manual alarm.
Within seconds, security personnel rushed into the corridor.
Dean escaped through the service staircase.
But before disappearing, he shouted something that would haunt Hannah.
“Ask Caleb why he married you in the first place!”
By dawn, Caleb had moved Hannah to a private hospital under another name.
There were guards outside every entrance.
Mara was gone.
Dean had vanished.
And Caleb refused to explain why his cousin had turned against them.
Hannah waited until the doctors finished their examination.
Then she asked the question.
“Did you marry me because of my mother?”
Caleb went completely still.
The silence lasted too long.
Finally, he sat down.
“Your mother didn’t die in that boating accident.”
Hannah’s eyes filled with tears.
“What?”
“She disappeared deliberately.”
“Why?”
“Because she witnessed something she was never supposed to see.”
Eleven years earlier, Hannah’s mother, Evelyn Whitmore, had worked as a financial investigator.
She discovered that a powerful network of businessmen had been moving stolen charitable funds through private shipping companies.
Silas Vane was involved.
So was Caleb’s father.
But the most dangerous member of the operation was someone nobody suspected.
Dean Rourke.
At the time, Dean was only twenty-three.
He appeared to be a charming young entrepreneur.
In reality, he was helping move millions through offshore accounts.
Evelyn collected evidence.
Then she disappeared.
Caleb claimed that his father had discovered her investigation and tried to help her escape.
But the operation failed.
Evelyn vanished along with the evidence.
“How do you know all this?” Hannah whispered.
Caleb looked away.
“Because my father left me her files.”
“And you never told me?”
“I couldn’t prove she was alive.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
Hannah’s voice broke.
“Did you know who I was when we first met?”
“Yes.”
The answer shattered her.
Five years.
Five years of marriage.
Every anniversary.
Every whispered promise.
Every night she believed she was sleeping beside the one person who had never lied about loving her.
“Was any of it real?”
Caleb reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
“Hannah, I approached you because I believed you might have something your mother left behind.”
She laughed bitterly.
“So I was an assignment.”
“No.”
“Don’t lie to me again.”
Caleb’s voice trembled.
“I fell in love with you.”
“But you didn’t tell me the truth.”
He had no defense.
Hannah turned toward the window.
“Leave.”
This time, he obeyed.
That afternoon, Hannah examined the electronic chip.
Mara had secretly left a small reader inside the portfolio.
When Hannah connected the device to a hospital computer, a single encrypted folder appeared.
Its name was:
ROURKE — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS.
She opened it.
A video began playing.
Her mother appeared on the screen.
Older than Hannah remembered.
Alive.
“Evelyn Whitmore,” Hannah whispered.
The woman in the video looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, Hannah, then the people I feared have finally found you.”
Hannah covered her mouth.
Her mother’s voice shook.
“Your husband isn’t the person you think he is.”
Hannah felt her heart stop.
Evelyn continued.
“But neither is the man who claims to be your enemy.”
The video flickered.
Then another image appeared.
A boy, perhaps ten years old, standing outside a small white house.
The same boy from the photograph.
Evelyn spoke again.
“His name is Noah.”
Hannah leaned closer.
“And he is the reason I disappeared.”
The screen suddenly froze.
A warning appeared.
REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.
Someone was trying to erase the recording.
Hannah quickly disconnected the device.
But not before she saw one final file.
A birth certificate.
The mother’s name was Evelyn Whitmore.
The father’s name was concealed.
And the date of birth was exactly seven months after Hannah’s father had supposedly died.
Hannah stared at the document.
Her mother had another child.
A son.
A brother Hannah had never known existed.
Then the hospital door opened.
A young man stood in the doorway.
He couldn’t have been older than twenty.
His dark eyes looked painfully familiar.
“Hannah?”
She slowly stood.
“Who are you?”
His lips trembled.
“My name is Noah.”
He glanced toward the guards outside.
“Your mother sent me.”
Hannah took one step toward him.
Then Noah said something that made her blood run cold.
“Don’t tell Caleb I’m here.”
“Why?”
The young man reached into his coat and removed an old photograph.
It showed Caleb standing beside Evelyn Whitmore.
The photograph was dated three years before Caleb claimed he first learned about Hannah.
Noah looked at her.
“Because Caleb wasn’t sent to find your mother.”
He swallowed.
“He was sent to make sure she never came home.”
