“A NEW BEGINNING AFTER A 12-HOUR SURGERY: 9-YEAR-OLD ZOEY CLEGHORN’S COURAGEOUS FIGHT AGAINST BONE CANCER”

Now comes the hard work.

Out comes the epidural. In comes physical therapy. And for 9-year-old Zoey Cleghorn from Addison, Alabama, life has already turned into something entirely new just two days after a marathon 12-hour surgery at Children’s of Alabama.

Zoey is fighting osteosarcoma, an aggressive and unforgiving form of bone cancer. In her latest and most complex procedure, surgeons performed a rotationplasty—a rare and life-changing operation designed to give her the best possible chance at mobility and independence in the future.

During the surgery, doctors removed Zoey’s lower leg. Her femur was preserved, and her ankle and foot were carefully reattached to her upper thigh. In this new configuration, her backward-facing foot will eventually function as a knee joint, allowing her to use a prosthetic and regain movement in a way that supports long-term activity and growth.

It is a procedure that is as emotionally heavy as it is medically remarkable.

For a child, the adjustment is enormous—not just physically, but emotionally. Zoey is now beginning to process a body that has changed in a way most adults can barely imagine, all while recovering from one of the most demanding surgeries in pediatric orthopedic oncology.

Her mother, Amy, shared that Zoey is doing well in the early stages of recovery. But she also made it clear: this is just the beginning of a long road ahead. Healing, adaptation, and rehabilitation will take time, patience, and incredible strength.

And strength is something Zoey is already showing.

Osteosarcoma is known for being relentless. It does not pause, and it does not discriminate. That is what makes stories like Zoey’s so deeply emotional—because behind every medical term and surgical plan is a child still learning how to be brave in real time.

There are going to be difficult days ahead. Days of pain, therapy, frustration, and adjustment. But there are also going to be milestones—first steps, first progress, first moments of confidence returning.

Right now, Zoey is at the very start of that journey.

Her family is hoping the world will surround her with encouragement in this moment. Words of support, kindness, and love matter more than people realize in situations like this. They become part of the healing environment itself.

So if there is anything to say to Zoey today, it is simple:

She is strong. She is brave. And she is still every bit the same bright, beautiful, and determined little girl she has always been.

Now begins the hard work—but she does not have to face it alone. 🙏
