On July 26, 2020, a normal summer day at Georgian Bay turned into a life-or-death situation within moments.
Sixteen-year-old Jamey Ruth Klassen heard someone calling for help from the water. A 40-year-old man, Christopher G. Robertson, had capsized his kayak and was struggling to stay afloat far from shore.
There was no hesitation.
Jamey entered the water and swam approximately 600 feet toward the sound, fully aware of the distance and the risk. By the time she reached the area, the man had already gone under.
She dove.

About 12 feet below the surface, she found him unconscious.
She brought him back up and began the long effort of pulling him toward shore, moving steadily despite the weight and resistance of the water. Every second mattered, and stopping was not an option.
As she continued, a paddleboarder reached them and helped bring the man the rest of the way to safety.
Because of her actions, he survived.
What stands out is not just the distance she swam or the depth she reached, but the decision she made in the moment. She heard someone in danger and acted immediately, without waiting for someone else to step in.
