Man Lives with 12cm Chopstick Stuck in His Throat for 8 Years

In a truly astonishing medical case from China, a man lived with a 12cm metal chopstick lodged in his throat for eight years before finally seeking treatment.

The incident began eight years ago when the man, surnamed Wang, accidentally swallowed the chopstick while eating and drinking. Although he felt pain immediately afterward, he could still breathe normally, so he chose not to seek serious medical help.

Doctors at the time recommended surgery to remove the object, which might have required an incision in the neck. Terrified of the procedure, the man refused treatment and decided to “live with it.”

Over the next eight years, he occasionally felt discomfort but dismissed it. Recently, the pain became much worse — especially in the mornings and when swallowing food — forcing him to finally return to the hospital.

Doctors at the Central Hospital in Dalian City, Liaoning Province, were shocked to discover the long metal chopstick still embedded near the soft palate. Remarkably, despite its size and location, it had not caused severe damage to his throat or vocal cords.

Instead of the more invasive neck surgery the man had feared, doctors successfully removed the chopstick through his mouth in a much less traumatic procedure. He recovered quickly and was discharged just days later.

The story quickly spread across Chinese social media, leaving many people stunned and amazed by the man’s ability to tolerate the foreign object for so long. Doctors described the case as extremely rare, noting that such a large object usually causes serious complications much sooner.

This extraordinary story serves as both a medical marvel and a cautionary tale about ignoring health issues out of fear. The man is now recovering well — finally free of the “guest” that had lived in his throat for nearly a decade.

An unbelievable case of human endurance!

Would you have waited that long, or gone to the doctor immediately?
