11-Year-Old Boy Mows Lawns All Summer to Buy Headstone for Biological Father He Never Met

FARGO, N.D. — An 11-year-old boy from Fargo has captured hearts across the country after spending his entire summer mowing lawns to buy a headstone for the biological father he never had the chance to meet.
Brandon Bakke was adopted as a baby. When he grew curious about his biological roots and began asking questions, his adoptive mother, Brandy, turned to Facebook and connected with Brandon’s biological sister, Tiffany.
That’s when they discovered the heartbreaking truth: Brandon’s father, Terrence, had passed away in Chicago the previous year at the age of 56. He had been buried in an unmarked grave because his family could not afford a headstone.
Rather than simply mourning a father he never knew, young Brandon decided to take action. He spent his summer vacation mowing lawns for neighbors and strangers, raising $400 toward a memorial.
Moved by the boy’s determination, Dakota Monument Company stepped in and donated the headstone entirely. They even let Brandon help design it.
Knowing from his sister that his father loved feeding the homeless, Brandon chose a touching design featuring a heart and two hands holding a bowl of soup.
Inspired by the experience, Brandon went on to launch his own lawn care and snow removal business called “Mowing and Blowing for a Purpose.” He now uses part of the proceeds to help other families afford memorials for their loved ones.
When asked what he believes his father would think of his efforts, Brandon gave a mature and heartfelt response: “If he could see it, he would be proud of me.”
Despite never meeting his father, Brandon ensured his memory would live on — demonstrating remarkable compassion, maturity, and generosity far beyond his years.
A beautiful story of love, loss, and a child’s determination to honor a man he only knew through stories.
