17-Year-Old San Antonio Teen Dies After Falling from Car Window During Spurs Playoff Celebration

In a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken the San Antonio community, 17-year-old Jose “Joey” Rodriguez lost his life after suffering a severe brain injury while celebrating the Spurs’ playoff run.
Joey was riding in the passenger-side window of a moving vehicle when the car reportedly struck a curb. The impact caused him to fall out and strike his head on the pavement. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital, where he was later declared brain-dead.
His family held onto hope and kept him on life support for several days, but ultimately made the painful decision to say goodbye. Joey passed away surrounded by loved ones.
A dedicated student at Frank Tejeda Academy and a hardworking employee at Bill Miller Bar-B-Q, Joey was remembered by those who knew him as a kind-hearted, respectful, and ambitious young man. He had big dreams of graduating high school and building a bright future for himself.
“Joey was the kind of kid who always worked hard and treated everyone with respect,” friends and family shared. “He had so much life ahead of him.”

The tragic incident has prompted renewed calls for fans to celebrate responsibly during Spurs playoff games. Both police and Joey’s family are urging people to stay fully inside vehicles, wear seatbelts, and avoid risky behavior such as hanging out of windows or standing in moving cars.
This devastating loss serves as a painful reminder of how quickly a moment of joy can turn into tragedy when safety is overlooked. The San Antonio community continues to mourn the promising young life cut far too short, while hoping Joey’s story will help prevent similar accidents in future celebrations.
