Missing Auburn Student Found Dead in Mountainous Area of Japan, Family Says

A missing Auburn University student who disappeared while traveling in Japan has been found dead, according to a heartbreaking statement released by his family.
Weston Higginbotham was discovered by a volunteer search-and-rescue team in a mountainous region outside Kyoto after days of intensive search efforts. Authorities have not yet released additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
In an emotional Facebook post, Weston’s parents confirmed the devastating news and thanked the thousands of people around the world who supported the search.
“We are forever grateful for the time we had with our sweet, precious Weston, but cannot begin to understand what life without him will be like,” the family wrote.
The family also expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming support they received from people across the United States, Japan, and beyond.
“We are deeply grateful to the countless people across the United States, Japan, and around the world who shared Weston’s story, prayed for our family, offered encouragement, and helped in the search efforts,” the statement continued. “The outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives.”
Weston had been reported missing while visiting Japan, prompting widespread concern online and an extensive effort involving volunteers, local authorities, and supporters who shared information across social media platforms.
The family has now asked for privacy as they begin mourning the unimaginable loss of their son.
“We shared our story here and in the media in the hope of finding Weston,” the post concluded. “We now ask for privacy as we begin to navigate this unimaginable loss.”
