TRAGIC DOUBLE LOSS IN SAN DIEGO CASE: NEWBORN DIES DAYS AFTER MOTHER, SUSPECT FACES DOUBLE MURDER CHARGES
A deeply tragic case out of San Diego has left investigators, medical staff, and the community reeling after a newborn baby died just days after the death of her teenage mother.
Authorities responded in the early hours of May 30, 2026, after multiple 911 calls reported a shooting at a short-term rental property in the Bay Park area of San Diego, California.
When officers arrived, they found 17-year-old Jariah Edwards outside the home suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders immediately began lifesaving efforts for both Edwards and her unborn child before she was rushed to hospital.
Doctors performed an emergency C-section in an attempt to save the baby. Despite those efforts, Edwards later died at the hospital.
Her daughter was delivered at approximately 32 weeks gestation and placed in critical care.
Medical officials later confirmed the newborn suffered a severe hypoxic brain injury due to lack of oxygen at the time of the attack.
For several days, the infant remained under intensive medical supervision. However, despite continued treatment, the baby died seven days after her mother.
Authorities say the case has now resulted in double murder charges.
The suspect, 21-year-old Trevon Williams of Phoenix, Arizona, is identified by prosecutors as Edwards’ former boyfriend and the father of the child.
According to court statements, the relationship between Edwards and Williams was marked by ongoing domestic violence, threats, and escalating conflict in the months leading up to the shooting.
Prosecutors allege that Williams traveled from Arizona to San Diego after learning Edwards was staying at a rental property with family, and that he went there with the intent to kill her.
The investigation details presented in court describe a targeted act of violence that ultimately led to the deaths of both mother and child.
As the legal process continues, the case has drawn widespread attention and renewed focus on domestic violence prevention and early intervention warning signs.
For the family of Jariah Edwards, however, the outcome is already irreversible.
Two lives lost, and a community left searching for answers in the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy.
