Broken Arm. Human Bite Mark. More Than 30 Bruises — The Full Horror of What Was Done to Baby Preston Davey!
The heartbreaking case of Preston Davey has shocked the United Kingdom as disturbing details revealed in court exposed the extent of the abuse the 13-month-old allegedly endured before his death.
Prosecutors told the court that Preston suffered a catalogue of injuries, including a broken arm, a human bite mark, and more than 30 separate bruises across his tiny body. Medical experts reportedly concluded that many of the injuries had occurred over time, painting a devastating picture of repeated abuse rather than a single incident.
Preston Davey died in July 2023 after being placed in the care of Jamie Varley, 37, a former secondary school teacher involved in child safeguarding, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32. The couple adopted the baby when he was around nine months old. Over the following four months, Preston was allegedly subjected to routine physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at their home in Staining, near Blackpool.
A post-mortem examination revealed around 40 external and internal traumatic injuries. Some were consistent with forcible penetration and sexual abuse. Additional findings included bruises to his forehead, throat, mouth, and bottom, as well as evidence of respiratory obstruction — the cause of death — and signs of repeated harm, such as older injuries alongside fresh ones.
Court testimony highlighted multiple hospital visits during Preston’s short time in the couple’s care. He was admitted on three occasions with issues including breathing difficulties, seizures, a nosebleed, and a fractured arm (elbow). Staff reportedly noticed facial bruising on at least two visits, but explanations provided by the defendants were accepted at the time, and the child was returned home each time.
Varley claimed Preston had accidentally drowned in the bath, but evidence presented in court, including videos showing the baby in distress, painted a far more sinister picture. Prosecutors described Preston being treated as a “plaything,” with instances of sleep deprivation, rough handling, and other cruelty documented.

In June 2026, following an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, Jamie Varley was found guilty of murder, child cruelty, sexual offenses, and other charges. He received a whole-life order, meaning he will never be released from prison. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault, and sentenced to 25 years.
The case has raised serious questions about missed opportunities by social services, medical professionals, and adoption agencies. Despite warning signs — including hospital visits, visible bruising, and the fractured arm — Preston was not removed from the home. An independent review is now examining the actions of involved authorities, including Oldham Council and health trusts.
Preston’s biological mother has spoken of her “unimaginable pain,” while foster carers and the public have expressed outrage over the failures that allowed this tragedy to unfold. The case serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for robust safeguarding and swift intervention in vulnerable children’s lives.
Our thoughts remain with Preston’s family and all those who loved him. May his short life lead to meaningful reforms that protect other children from such horror.
