Kansas City Highway Shooting Suspect Oscar Sanchez-Munoz Believed Found Dead in Flooded Basement of Burned Home

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri — More than a week after a deadly shooting spree on Kansas City highways and a dramatic police standoff, authorities believe the body of suspect Oscar Sanchez-Munoz, 22, has been discovered in the flooded basement of his family’s burned home.

On Wednesday, June 25, family members searching through debris in the basement of the residence near U.S. 24 Highway and Brookside Boulevard noticed the smell of decomposition. After moving clutter and items displaced by flooding from firefighting efforts, they reportedly found what appeared to be a human body wearing clothing matching what Sanchez-Munoz was last seen wearing.

Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) detectives were notified around 2 p.m. The home had caught fire during a standoff with law enforcement on June 17, the day after the shootings. Police had initially believed Sanchez-Munoz may have escaped the blaze, prompting a weeklong manhunt involving multiple agencies and an FBI reward offer.

The basement was described as highly cluttered, partially collapsed, and flooded, which complicated earlier searches. Despite multiple prior checks of the property, the body remained hidden until the family’s efforts this week.

Sanchez-Munoz was suspected in a June 16 shooting spree where he allegedly fired at multiple vehicles along interstates and Truman Road, killing one person and injuring four others. The incidents occurred near areas associated with World Cup events.

Formal identification and cause of death are pending autopsy and further investigation. The discovery appears to bring a close to the intense manhunt that followed the violent incidents.
