Preston’s Short Life Deserved So Much More
Preston Davey was only 13 months old. He should have been discovering the world, taking his first steps, and growing up surrounded by love and safety.
Instead, his life ended in heartbreaking circumstances that shocked the community.
After a trial at Preston Crown Court, former teacher Jamie Varley was found guilty of Preston’s murder, along with multiple child sexual abuse, child cruelty, and other serious offenses. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was also found guilty of offenses including allowing the death of a child, child cruelty, and sexual assault.
Preston, also known as Elijah, had been placed with the couple at nine months old while they were in the process of adopting him. Only four months later, he was rushed to hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his life could not be saved.
During the trial, jurors heard evidence that Preston had suffered numerous non-accidental injuries over time. Medical experts concluded that his death was caused by acute upper airway obstruction, rejecting the explanation that he had accidentally drowned.
The verdict marked the end of a difficult court case, but it cannot undo the loss of a little boy whose future was taken from him far too soon.
Preston’s story has prompted renewed discussion about child protection, the responsibilities of caregivers, and the importance of recognizing signs that a child may be at risk.
Today, many remember Preston not for the horrific crimes committed against him, but as a child who deserved the chance to grow up in a home filled with love, security, and kindness.
His life was brief, but his memory continues to inspire calls for vigilance, accountability, and stronger protection for vulnerable children so that tragedies like this become far less likely in the future.
