Gruesome Details Emerge in South Carolina Case: Partial Remains of Missing 4-Year-Old Javeayah Harris Found After Parents Allegedly Dissolved Her Body in Chemicals

Disturbing new details have surfaced in the tragic death of 4-year-old Javeayah Harris, whose partial remains were recovered from a South Carolina reservoir after her parents allegedly abused her to death, dissolved much of her body with corrosive chemicals, and dumped the remnants before reporting her missing.
Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced Thursday that investigators located human remains consistent with Javeayah’s DNA in Cedar Creek Reservoir (also known as Dumpy Pond) in neighboring Fairfield County following an extensive search involving over 200 first responders. The remains were identified through DNA testing.
Javeayah’s parents, Johmarea Harris and Michilae Herring, were arrested on July 4 after reporting the girl missing from their Aiken home on June 30. Authorities believe Javeayah had been dead for at least a month prior to the false report. The couple allegedly assaulted the child, causing a fatal injury for which they did not seek medical help.
Sheriff Sawyer described the parents’ efforts to conceal the crime as “repulsive and revolting,” noting the use of corrosive chemicals and tools to accelerate the destruction of the child’s body before dumping the remains. “In my 37-year career in law enforcement, I have never, ever, heard of anything so horrific,” he said, adding that he refuses to refer to them as “mom and dad.”
Both parents face charges of homicide by child abuse and destruction/desecration of human remains. Herring received an additional charge of filing a false police report. They were denied bond in initial hearings, and their cases are being transferred to circuit court. They are scheduled to appear in court on September 18.
The community has held vigils for Javeayah, described as a non-verbal child, while her newborn sister remains with family. Officials have stated it is unlikely more remains will be recovered due to the extent of the alleged dismemberment and chemical treatment.
This case has deeply shaken investigators and the public, highlighting the profound failure to protect a vulnerable child.
