What began as a family day of scalloping in the shallow waters off Florida’s Gulf Coast turned into a fight for survival that captured national attention.

Seventeen-year-old Addison Bethea was collecting scallops near Keaton Beach when she suddenly felt a powerful tug on her right leg. Moments later, she realized she had been attacked by a shark, believed by witnesses to be a 9-foot bull shark. The predator clamped onto her thigh and attempted to drag her underwater as she desperately fought back, striking the shark and trying to pry its jaws open.

Just a few feet away, Addison’s 22-year-old brother, Rhett Willingham, heard her scream. A firefighter and EMT, Rhett reacted without hesitation. He swam directly toward the shark, punching, kicking, and wrestling with the animal until it finally released his sister. According to later interviews, he grabbed Addison and continued fighting the shark as they moved toward safety.

Rhett’s lifesaving actions did not stop there. Recognizing that Addison was suffering catastrophic blood loss, he quickly fashioned a tourniquet from a piece of rope aboard a nearby boat. His emergency medical training proved critical, helping control the bleeding until a rescue helicopter transported Addison to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where trauma surgeons immediately began emergency treatment.

Doctors performed multiple surgeries in an effort to save her severely damaged right leg. Despite their best efforts, the extensive muscle, nerve, and vascular injuries made an above-the-knee amputation necessary. Although Addison lost her leg, doctors and her family have repeatedly stated that Rhett’s courage and quick medical response almost certainly saved her life.

Rather than allowing the tragedy to define her, Addison embraced rehabilitation with remarkable determination. She learned to walk using a prosthetic leg, returned to many of the activities she loves, and has inspired thousands by sharing her recovery journey. She has also encouraged others not to fear the ocean, emphasizing that shark attacks remain extremely rare and that she still hopes to enjoy the water again.

Rhett Willingham was widely recognized as a hero throughout Florida. His bravery, combined with his professional training and calm decision-making under extreme pressure, transformed what could have been a fatal encounter into an extraordinary story of survival, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between brother and sister.
