A Walk Home Ends in Unimaginable Tragedy

What should have been an ordinary walk home turned into a devastating tragedy for two sisters in North Las Vegas, leaving one dead and the other with life-altering injuries.

According to police, 17-year-old Janiah Gant was fatally struck after a vehicle allegedly sped through an intersection at a high rate of speed. Her 19-year-old sister, Leilani Wigfall, survived but suffered severe injuries. Family members have said the impact caused her to lose all of her teeth, and she now faces a long and difficult recovery.

Investigators allege that 32-year-old Triquan Hughes was driving at more than 80 mph in a 35 mph zone when he ran a red light, collided with another vehicle, struck a utility pole, and then hit the two sisters before crashing into a wall.

Authorities further allege that, following the crash, Hughes made statements to officers indicating he expected to be released on bail quickly. Police also reported detecting the odor of alcohol and stated that he declined to participate in field sobriety tests. Investigators have also said that Hughes’ 10-year-old son was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The allegations against Hughes are part of the ongoing criminal case, and they have not been proven in court.
