Preston, United Kingdom — In a courtroom heavy with emotion, the birth mother of 13-month-old Preston Davey sat through proceedings related to the tragic circumstances surrounding her son’s death. Sarah Davey faced the unimaginable pain of revisiting details of a loss no parent should endure.

Preston Davey died in July 2023 after suffering months of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at the hands of his adoptive parents, according to court evidence. His adoptive father, teacher Jamie Varley, received a whole-life order for murder and sexual abuse. Varley’s partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years for related offenses, including allowing the child’s death.

Sarah Davey, who had her son taken into care shortly after birth, described the profound grief of knowing her child endured such suffering. In a victim impact statement, she expressed that Preston “should be here today” but is “forever 13 months old.” She spoke of living with the “unimaginable pain of wondering” what he went through.
