Baton Rouge, Louisiana — The search for 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather continues as family, friends, and the community refuse to give up hope, even as authorities believe his body is located in a local landfill.

Minnieweather was last seen around 2 a.m. on June 5 near Bradley Street in the Foster and Winbourne area. Police later determined that he was beaten to death during a confrontation. Maurice Parms, 51, was arrested on June 20 and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the teen’s death.

Investigators say strong evidence indicates that Minnieweather’s body was picked up by a garbage collection truck and transported to the East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill in Zachary. The massive site covers more than 400 acres and receives about 1,600 tons of waste daily. Officials have narrowed the search area but estimate recovery efforts will begin around July 13 with assistance from the FBI and specialized imaging technology.

At press conferences, Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse and other officials have updated the public on the ongoing challenges of the recovery. Family members have expressed deep pain while continuing to call for answers and support. Volunteer groups, including the United Cajun Navy, have assisted in earlier search efforts across the area.

A $10,000 reward was previously offered for information leading to the teen’s recovery. The community remains united in its determination to bring Ja’Derrius home.
