People across Alabama and beyond are mourning the death of 15-year-old Will Roberts, the Tuscaloosa County teenager whose courageous fight against stage four bone cancer inspired thousands.

Will passed away early Thursday morning, July 23, 2026, at a hospital in San Diego where he had been receiving care. His mother, Brittney Battles Roberts, shared that the cancer had progressed to his brain, affecting his mental capacity. She and her husband Jason made the painful decision to end his suffering.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Brittney noted that Will died on her birthday. She described it as “a beautiful gift that God gave me,” calling it a celebration that there is no more cancer and that Will has entered the kingdom of Heaven.

A Viral Plea That Captured the Nation
Will first gained national attention in April after he used his mother’s Facebook page to post a video pleading for help accessing an experimental cancer drug. The video spread widely, prompting support from lawmakers, Dr. Oz, and others who helped connect the family with a treatment facility in California. There, he received the drug known as Delta Rex G.

Despite the outpouring of support and medical efforts, the disease continued to advance.

Personal Tributes from the Community
Pastor Jason Poole, who became close to the family, described Will as resilient, encouraging, and deeply faithful. Poole said their bond formed quickly and grew into a family-like relationship. Even as a pastor accustomed to guiding others through grief, he found Will’s death especially difficult because he was also losing a friend.

“Will was resilient,” Poole said. “Will was always encouraging us, and that’s why Will has probably been instrumental in leading more people to the Lord across this country. I’ve had people reach out to us from South Africa because of Will Roberts. What a testimony. But that’s Will, and Will has done more for the kingdom of God in his 15 years than most all of us will do our entire life.”

Poole noted that Will’s concern extended beyond himself. Even while fighting for his own life, he hoped his battle would ultimately help others.

Family’s Message of Gratitude and Love
Brittney Roberts thanked the thousands who supported them throughout the journey. “You have prayed when we didn’t have the strength. You celebrated every victory with us and cried through every setback. You loved Will like family, and we will spend the rest of our lives grateful for every single one of you.”

She expressed the depth of her love: “Until I see you again, Will…I love you more than words will ever be able to say. It has been the greatest honor of my life to be your mama.”

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville also paid tribute, highlighting Will’s courage and the impact he had on so many.
