Portuguese prosecutors formally declared German national Christian Brueckner a suspect — known under Portuguese law as an “arguido” — in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann.

The development, announced in April 2022, marked a significant procedural step in the long-running investigation. Although Portuguese authorities did not publicly name the suspect at the time, media outlets identified him as Brueckner, who had already been named by German investigators as the primary person of interest.

What “Arguido” Status Means
Under Portuguese law, an arguido is a formal suspect who is given certain legal rights, including the right to remain silent and the right to a lawyer. The status does not equate to a formal charge. Brueckner has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance and has consistently denied any involvement.

Background on the Suspect
Brueckner, who was 45 at the time of the formal declaration, has a criminal record that includes convictions for sexual offences. He was living in the Algarve region of Portugal around the time Madeleine vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on 3 May 2007. A mobile phone linked to him was traced near the resort on the night she disappeared.

German authorities first publicly identified him as a suspect in June 2020, stating they believed he was responsible for Madeleine’s death. He has been serving a prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of an American woman in the same area.

Ongoing Investigation
The Metropolitan Police in the UK and Portuguese authorities have continued to investigate the case for nearly two decades. Despite numerous searches and inquiries, Madeleine has never been found, and no one has been charged with her abduction or murder.

Kate and Gerry McCann have repeatedly stated their determination to find out what happened to their daughter. The formal suspect status for Brueckner represented one of the most concrete developments in the case in several years, though it did not lead to immediate charges.
