Born Without Legs, Paige Calendine Became a Standout American Gymnast

Paige Calendine was born on June 16, 2011, in Zanesville, Ohio, without legs. Doctors could not fully explain the condition. Her parents, Heidi and Sean Calendine, decided early that her missing limbs would not define her limits. At 18 months old, they enrolled her in gymnastics classes at Zanesville Gymnastics—not only so she could play with other children, but to build the upper-body strength she would need for everyday life.

What began as physical therapy quickly became a passion. Paige adapted every skill to her body. She developed exceptional core and arm strength, learning to swing, balance, and flip in ways that worked for her. Coaches made only minor adjustments; the rest came from her own creativity and determination. She competed in the USA Gymnastics Xcel program, which allows more individualized routines, and regularly placed against able-bodied athletes in conventional meets.

She collected medals and trophies at local, state, and regional competitions. Videos of her beam and bar routines spread widely online, drawing millions of views and turning her into a visible example of what adaptive sport can look like. In June 2024 she was invited to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Minneapolis as part of the “Gymnastics for All” initiative. There she performed, spoke about her experience as a disabled athlete, and advocated for greater recognition of para-gymnastics. She also met Olympic legends including Aly Raisman and Nellie Kim.

A 41-minute documentary titled Built Different, released on Prime Video in 2024, followed her training and competitions. Her mother shared regular updates on TikTok and Instagram under the hashtag #Paigesjourney, further amplifying her story.

In 2025, at age 14, increasing pain related to her condition led Paige to step away from competitive gymnastics. She has remained involved with the sport as a coach for younger children at Zanesville Gymnastics and continues other activities, including archery. She has expressed interest in eventually becoming a pediatrician.

Paige has consistently said she does not see herself as different from her teammates. “I just see myself as the rest,” she has remarked. “I don’t really notice it, and nobody else really notices either.” Her journey has made her a recognized symbol of determination and inclusion in youth sports.
