Ignacia Sanmartin: A Chilean Girl’s Courageous Battle with a Rare Lymphatic Condition

In Chile, five-year-old Ignacia Sanmartin from Villa Alemana faced an extraordinary medical challenge from an early age. She was born with a rare condition known as lymphangioma—a benign growth caused by abnormal development of the lymphatic vessels. Over time, the mass continued to grow, developing into a large, fluid-filled cystic structure that affected her chin, cheeks, and neck. The condition was detected prenatally. When her mother, Danitza, was only three and a half months pregnant, a scan revealed the serious problem. In Ignacia’s case, these vessels grew out of control, forming clusters of tiny cysts that expanded into a substantial mass on her face and neck.
By the time she was five years old, the growth had become life-threatening. It pressed against her windpipe, making breathing difficult—especially when she had a cold or illness. The mass also caused earaches, balance problems, pain while chewing, and discomfort at the base of her tongue. Her parents, Jonathan and Danitza, endured years of stares, insensitive comments, and the constant search for doctors willing to intervene. Many specialists had been reluctant to operate because of the tumor’s size and complexity.
In 2018, maxillofacial and head-and-neck surgeon Dr. Gonzalo Rossel agreed to perform the high-risk procedure. The goal was complete removal of the mass in a single operation to prevent further growth and protect Ignacia’s airway. The surgery lasted approximately 14 hours. During the operation, the team discovered that the lesion was not a pure lymphangioma but a mixed form intertwined with veins and blood vessels. This made dissection extremely difficult. After most of the mass on one side had been removed, a remaining portion bled heavily when cut because it was deeply fused with blood vessels and located beneath the facial nerve. The procedure was tense and required meticulous care to avoid catastrophic bleeding or nerve damage.
Despite the complications, the surgery succeeded in removing the bulk of the growth. Doctors noted that lymphangiomas can sometimes recur, so Ignacia would require ongoing monitoring in the hope that any future growth would remain small and manageable. Her story was later featured in a Discovery Channel documentary series highlighting extraordinary medical cases, bringing wider attention to the challenges of rare lymphatic malformations and the skill required for such intricate pediatric surgery.
Ignacia’s journey underscores both the resilience of children facing rare congenital conditions and the determination of families who refuse to give up. Lymphatic malformations are typically present from birth, though their exact cause is not fully understood.
