There is something heartbreaking and beautiful about this photo at the same time.
A mom. A dad. A brother. A sister.
All curled up together around 3-year-old Ezra, holding him as tightly as they can while knowing their time together may be running out.
His mom Ashley says her little boy is now on end-of-life care.
And this family is trying to make every moment they still have with him count.
I came across their story after Ashley shared this incredibly intimate family photo taken in their home in Rantoul, Illinois.
Look closely at it.
There are no hospital walls surrounding them.
No doctors.
No procedures.
Just a family piled together on a bed, loving a little boy through something no parent should ever have to prepare for.
Ezra has GM1 gangliosidosis, an ultra-rare, progressive genetic disorder that attacks the brain and nervous system.
There is currently no cure.
Ashley says Ezra was developing normally at first, but around his first birthday, they began noticing things were different.
He wasn’t walking independently.
His crawling changed.
He struggled with his grasp and depth perception.
He wasn’t developing speech.
Eventually, they learned why.
GM1 slowly takes away abilities a child once had, affecting movement, speech, swallowing and breathing.
Ashley says Ezra has endured seizures, respiratory problems, feeding difficulties and repeated illnesses. In 2025 alone, she says he had more than 108 medical-related visits and was hospitalized or taken to the emergency room more than 15 times.
And yet, when she describes her son, that isn’t what she wants you to know about him.
She calls him her “sunshine boy.”
A little boy who loves being sung to.
Who loves swinging and swimming.
Who loves cuddles and peek-a-boo.
Who adores his siblings.
And whose absolute favorite thing has always been bath time.
Ashley says Ezra has always been one of the happiest little boys, with a smile and laugh capable of bringing joy to everyone around him.
But his disease has continued progressing.
On May 6th, his family says Ezra entered end-of-life care.
Ashley recently wrote that they believe this may be the last year they have with their son.
Then came another update that hurt to read.
“This past week has felt like a lifetime.”
Ashley says Ezra’s little body continues to slow down.
“We continue to walk through Ezra’s end of life journey one moment at a time.”
Their focus now is painfully simple.
Keep him comfortable.
Keep him peaceful.
Surround him with love.
And make every second they have left together count.
Maybe that’s why this photo says so much.
Because when so much else has been taken out of their control, they can still do this.
They can hold him.
They can lie beside him.
They can make sure Ezra feels Mom, Dad, his brother and his sister wrapped around him.
And they can love their sunshine boy for every second God gives them.
Today, I hope we can add a whole lot more people to that list.

Pray for comfort.
Pray for peace.
Pray for strength for two parents facing the unimaginable.
And pray that however much time this family has together, it is filled with moments just like the one captured in this photograph.
