‘I Need Her to Keep Fighting’: 8-Year-Old With Brain Cancer Back in Hospital as Tumor Grows

The 8-year-old girl whose mother said last month she was slowly losing her to brain cancer is back in the hospital.

Her tumor has grown. She has stopped eating. And her mom says all she can do now is hold her hand and beg her little girl to keep fighting.

Sabrena Beard reached out with the update she never wanted to give.

Her daughter was admitted after her heart rate became dangerously high and doctors found she was severely dehydrated. Then came the news Sabrena feared most: the tumor in her daughter’s brain has gotten bigger.

“It’s hard,” she said. “They just saying the tumor growing. Not a good look at all.”

Many people have been praying for this child since her story was first shared on Aug. 19.

It began with headaches on New Year’s Day. Sabrena kept searching for answers until doctors found a brain tumor — diffuse midline glioma, or DMG. Just seven days later, her daughter underwent brain surgery, one day before she turned 8. Another procedure followed to drain fluid. Then came months of treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and a moment in April when she rang the bell.

The family thought they were finally moving toward better days. In May, Sabrena said, doctors told them the tumor was shrinking.

Then everything changed.

By July, her daughter’s condition had deteriorated dramatically. The family learned the cancer had spread, and she was placed on hospice.

Now she is back in a hospital bed. She has stopped eating. The tumor is growing. And Sabrena is sitting beside her, trying to keep her daughter fighting while facing a fear she has never known.

“I ain’t never lost a child like this,” she said. “I need her to keep fighting.”

Then came one small moment that meant everything.

Sabrena kept telling her daughter to fight for as long as she could. The little girl squeezed her hand and moved her arm. To her mother, that was her baby saying she could still hear her.

“I can’t lose her.”

That is the fear behind every word this mom is speaking. She knows what doctors have said. She knows this cancer is progressing. Knowing that does not make a mother ready to stop hoping for more time.
